On Saturday, October 25th I joined some good friends to experience duck hunting on opening day. However, I did not plan to participate in traditional duck hunting, but rather capture the experience of duck hunting. My choice of gear was not a 12 gauge shotgun, but my Canon camera.
I had hoped for fair weather but instead found myself on the foggiest morning of the year. Not only would the fog make it difficult to photograph the hunting experience it also presented challenges to the hunters.
Just like the artist has its medium and desires to perfect their skill so do these serious duck hunters. From their knowledge and preferences in duck calls to their shotguns and ammunition these men are perfecting a craft. No expense is spared as they set out to bring home their prize. Especially notable is their investment in decoys.
All morning the sound of distant hunter's guns sounded through the dense fog.
What began ages ago as a means of survival, a way to feed ones family, has become a genuine craft. Duck hunting is an experience where one can connect with nature and friends that hopefully ends with enough ducks for a feast.
